Anybody found a working MAME?

I tried GMAME with MAME, and the game would run, but the keyboard was unresponsive, and I couldn't leave full-screen. Running it with SDLMAME only gave me a small window and no sound. Running qmc2+sdlmame gave me problems about not being able to initialize the display. Trying to install SDL tried to bring in a whole bunch of PulseAudio stuff which I am hesitant to do, since my FireWire audio interface uses Jack, and it was hard to get working, and some ppl say PulseAudio doesn't play well with Jack. Anybody got it to work, or does any of this suggest solutions to anyone?
