"Out of range"

Wanted to try this distro on my main machine over the weekend, as I quite liked how sleek it was on my netbook. But on the main machine all I got when booting was "Out of range" on all monitors, no proper signal.

Video card is an ATI 5750, the 3 LCD screens are at 1920x1080. Ubuntu Live ISOs seem to work fine.

Any idea what I can do to fix that?

I think that the native Linux ATI driver doesn't support multiple screens - the same thing with xorg NVidia one. You need a proprietary driver from ATI.
Boot with the only one monitor connected, install the OS and install fgirx from Synaptic.

But I have been using the native driver over the past years, not the proprietary one - it can handle multiple screens just fine. And as I said, Ubuntu Live ISOs work perfectly fine, both during boot-up and normal operation.

Maybe you used fgirx - it's not proprietary.

I'm at work at the moment, so I can't put your theory to the test (the try with only one screen connected one).

But unless I'm wildly mistaken here - which of course is entirely possible, though it would rather surprise me after having used Ubuntu for five years now - Ubuntu is using the open source version per default. You can enable a proprietary driver, through the "restricted drivers" panel. After the critter has booted up, of course.

Either way, I'm not even getting past the P.O.S.T. with the Remix OS Live ISO.

What default resolution is it using during start-up? If there is a difference to the one used by the Ubuntu Live ISOs, I suspect the issue I'm having would be there.

There is the same isolinux boot loader, so the screen resolution is the same.

I think you shuold try to boot with the one monitor connected at first.

Right, so first of all I probably should mention that I've had somewhat of a brain fart yesterday. Of course I'm not getting my grub menu, because the machine is not booting from my hard drive. Duh. Silly me.

So yeah, it is starting X that fails with the "out of range" message on the screen.

That being said, I've followed your suggestion yesterday night and had the machine start with only one of the screens connected. The only difference to before is that instead of the "out of range", I only get a blank/dark screen. Doesn't matter which monitor is connected, and I can't get into any terminals with ALT+CTRL+Fn either once it's past that point.

I seem to remember seeing the option to boot in text only mode from the the Live ISO boot menu, so I may try that later on, although frankly I'm not sure what to look for other than switching the driver. With Ubuntu I never needed to install the proprietary driver, but I may give it a shot if it's needed here for some reason.

Look at the /var/log/Xorg.0.log and copy/paste its contents here.

Look at the /var/log/Xorg.0.log

If you search the web with "start x out of range radeon" keywords you can could find a lot of issues about Radeon in Linux.

The last thing that can work:
1) Install Remix_OS form your netbook on a flash card or an external HDD. Be sure to install Grub on the same partition.
2) Install frirx drivers.
3) Make a new LiveDVD .iso with Reamstersys.

Looking at the X log. Yeah. That does kinda make sense. Who would have thought, Ubuntu seems to spoil people the same way that OS X does...

Thanks for your help so far - I'm hoping that it's really just solving this one issue that keeps me from giving Remix OS a proper look (on a netbook that I don't use for making music it's not that much more useful than a normal Ubuntu, so I'd rather have it working on the main machine).

There's a reason I've been using Ubuntu, and not, say, Debian proper, or Gentoo etc. - I'm terribly, terribly lazy.
